History of High School Klang

Klang High School, officially known as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Klang (STK), stands as one of Selangor’s most historic educational institutions. Established on 14 January 1928 as the Temporary English Government School, it began humbly with only sixty-two students, a principal, and a single teacher. From these modest beginnings, the school steadily grew into a major secondary institution, enriched with academic, sporting, cultural, and community facilities. Its history reflects the broader educational and social development of Klang, shaped by the introduction of English education, the disruptions of the Second World War, post-war reconstruction, and the modernisation of Malaysia’s education system. Throughout its journey, Klang High School has remained true to its guiding motto, Probitas Et Fides—Loyalty and Integrity. The early years saw rapid expansion. By 1929, enrolment had nearly doubled, and in 1930 the main school building was officially opened by Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah. This marked a turning point, as student numbers rose sharply and co-curricular activities such as badminton, football, cricket, and table tennis were introduced. The 1930s brought further developments, including the establishment of the Literary and Debating Society, successful concerts, new sports houses, and a 100 percent pass rate in the Junior Cambridge Examination of 1934. These achievements laid the foundation for the school’s long-term emphasis on academic excellence, leadership, and student participation. The period from 1936 to 1940 was marked by institutional growth and leadership changes. During this time, Klang High School presented its first group of students for the School Certificate Examination, completed a science laboratory, and established a hostel for Malay students. The Old Boys’ Association was founded in 1940, strengthening alumni ties. However, the outbreak of the Second World War brought immense challenges. In 1941, the school became the headquarters of the Medical Auxiliary Service for North Klang, and during the Japanese occupation, its premises were converted into a military hospital and control centre. Students were relocated, and instruction was conducted in Nippon-go, with teachers undergoing Japanese-language training. After the war, the school reopened in October 1945 at Methodist School, Klang, before returning to its original premises in May 1946. Despite shortages of textbooks and equipment, teachers and students persevered. The post-war years saw the introduction of science, woodwork, and multiple languages, the reopening of the boys’ hostel, and the organisation of the first Prize-Giving Day in 1947. Rapid growth followed, with new classrooms, societies, and sporting facilities. By the late 1940s, enrolment had reached 800, and former students began entering the University of Malaya. The 1950s brought further achievements, including state-level sporting records, the establishment of medical and dental facilities, and recognition for alumni such as Tan Thian Siew, who received the George Medal for bravery. The Silver Jubilee in 1953 marked twenty-five years of progress. Rugby was introduced and quickly flourished, with the team becoming state champions in 1957. As enrolment continued to rise, the school was divided into primary and secondary sections, and by 1958, following the Education Ordinance, Klang High School officially became a secondary school. The 1960s saw further expansion, with new clubs, morning and afternoon sessions, and a major fundraising campaign for a new library, which was completed in 1968 and officially opened in 1970. The 1970s brought academic and sporting triumphs, including national-level achievements in badminton, judo, and cricket, as well as the celebration of the Golden Jubilee in 1978. By then, the school had grown to seven buildings and approximately 1,600 students. The 1980s and 1990s were characterised by reforms, modernisation, and community engagement. Initiatives included the introduction of discipline systems, the launch of the school magazine Semarak, and the upgrading of the resource centre. The school hosted major events such as the Golden Jubilee Sports Carnival in 1984 and welcomed distinguished visitors, including the Sultan of Selangor in 1991. Community activities flourished, with blood donation campaigns, charity evenings, and the construction of the Luqman Al-Hakim Prayer Hall, later upgraded to a mosque in 1997. Entering the new millennium, Klang High School underwent significant infrastructure improvements. A new three-storey building with eighteen classrooms, a multimedia room, and a computer room was completed in 2001, alongside Dewan Putera, a modern school hall costing RM1 million. That same year, Puan Hajah Siti Aishah binti Haji Abdullah became the school’s first female principal, focusing on restoring its reputation and strengthening its position as a Premier School. Under her leadership, the school achieved excellent academic results and notable co-curricular successes, including victories in district-level competitions. The Tourism Club was introduced, and the school received a bus donated by the Ministry of Education. Today, Klang High School, or STK, continues to serve as a prominent national secondary school in Selangor. Located on Jalan Meru, it functions as a boys’ school from Form One to Form Five and a mixed institution at Sixth Form level, preparing students for the STPM examination. Its facilities include science laboratories, a computer lab, a resource centre, sports courts, Dewan Putera, and the Luqman Al-Hakim Mosque. Its heritage is preserved through historic buildings, a mini museum, and the enduring traditions of scouting, sports, music, and leadership. From its humble beginnings in 1928 to its present identity, Klang High School has remained resilient, progressive, and committed to serving the Klang community. Its long record of achievements, its alumni, and its guiding motto—Probitas Et Fides, Loyalty and Integrity—continue to define its legacy as one of Selangor’s most respected educational institutions.

This achievement reflects HSKOBA’s commitment to embracing new ways of communicating while remaining firmly connected to its longstanding traditions. The website will provide members and friends of High School Klang with a convenient avenue to follow the Persatuan’s programmes, initiatives and activities. It will also help bring together Old Boys from different generations and locations. Datuk Ng Seing Liong

President, HSKOBA

It gives me great pleasure to present the official website of the Persatuan Bekas Murid-Murid Sekolah Tinggi Kelang—better known as the Klang High School Old Boys’ Association (HSKOBA). This website marks an important milestone in the Persatuan’s continuing history. More than a digital platform, it serves as a permanent home for the memories, achievements and shared experiences of generations of Klang High School students. It also provides an avenue for former students, teachers, staff and friends of the school to remain connected, wherever they may be. For many of us, Klang High School represents far more than an institution of learning. It is a place where our character was shaped, lifelong friendships were formed and the values of discipline, integrity, loyalty and service were nurtured. The motto, Probitas Et Fides or Loyalty and Integrity, continues to inspire the school community and its old boys. The launch of this website is especially meaningful as it enables HSKOBA to preserve its rich heritage while engaging younger generations through modern technology. It will help document the Association’s activities, highlight the contributions of its members and strengthen cooperation between past and present students. In doing so, it ensures that the spirit and traditions of Klang High School will continue to flourish as we approach our 100-year anniversary in the year 2028. I commend the committee and all those who contributed their time, effort and expertise to this initiative. I hope the website will become a vibrant source of information, a platform for fellowship and a lasting tribute to the proud history of Klang High School and our Old Boys’ Association. May HSKOBA continue to grow from strength to strength and may its bonds of friendship and service endure for many years to come. - Datuk Ng Seing Liong
